I believe people are asexual for the same reasons people are straight.
There is a broad spectrum of sexual diversity, many different orientations. Some are more commonly known than others. Asexuality is still relatively unknown so it might be rare to hear someone say it- that doesn’t mean there aren’t people out there who would identify as such; they may just lack the term for what they feel!
Amusingly enough, I can count on one hand how many people have told me they’re straight :D
